United Ruling Delayed

A federal bankruptcy judge says he won't issue a ruling in United Airlines' trial in Chicago until the end of the month, so the carrier and its machinists' union can have more time to work out an agreement.

Representatives from United and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers had hoped to resolve remaining differences over a new lower-cost pension plan.

A trial on the matter was expected to resume today with closing arguments.

The dominant carrier at Denver International Airport also wants to cut pay and benefits, but the union representing 20,000 machinists said employees would walk off their jobs if the judge approved that request.

The airlines has a total of some 6,000 employees in Colorado.
