A man estimated to be in his 40s is dead after an avalanche inside the boundaries of Summit County's Arapahoe Basin Ski Area.

Search and Rescue workers say the slide, about 300 to 400 feet wide, and 1,000 feet long, occurred about 10:30 Friday morning.

The avalanche was contained to the top of A-Basin's Pallavicini run.

Authorities say the man was alive when crews pulled him out of the snow, but he deteriorated quickly. Workers performed CPR for about a half-hour before he was pronounced dead at noon.

The victim had no identification, but officials have since learned the man was a Front Range resident. His name is being withheld pending notification of relatives.

There are no reports of anyone still missing, but searchers plan to return to the mountain as soon as conditions allow. Rising temperatures and "continuing extreme avalanche danger" forced them to abandon efforts just before 1:00 Friday afternoon.
