A good samaritan is being credited with trying to help Springs Police stop a suspected robber.

Scott Clay, the samaritan, stands about 5 foot 11 and weighs 260 pounds. "I played a lot of football," he said.

Those were assets he would end up needing when he stopped inside the 711 near Chelton and Fountain Tuesday night. “I turned around and this guy was trying to get the register. I put myself between the robber and my son. It turned into a wrestling match. I didn't know if he had gun or a knife. I then threw him out the door."

Police said 35-year-old Aaron Spencer got away, and was later arrested less than a quarter of a mile from the scene.

"There was a lady with her kids in the store and I was worried about the kids," Clay said why he jumped in.

“That's what one lady said, ‘Nice tackle.’"

Clay said he doesn't consider himself a hero, but was just following his gut instinct. "It makes me wonder what kind of situation you can get into just by walking into a gas station."

The suspect, Aaron Spencer, is no stranger to the law. His lengthy rap sheet includes robbery and domestic violence. He's also a registered sex offender.
