High Fire Danger Today

Flight Training Resuming Monday

Flight training will resume at the Air Force Academy on Monday for the first time since a training plane was grounded five years ago. The Air Force grounded its 35 (m) million dollar fleet of 113 T-3-A Firefly training planes in 1997 after the plane was involved in three fatal crashes. Cadets have since received training at private schools at a cost of more than three (m) million dollars a year. The Air Force has signed a five-year, 14-and-a-half (m) million dollar contract with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University of Florida to run the academy's training in the single-engine airplane. As many as 300 Air Force students will train the first year. The program will expand to train as many as 540 after that.
