WorldCom to Cut More Jobs

Updated: Thu 5:31 PM, Nov 21, 2002

Bankrupt telecommunications provider WorldCom will eliminate 500 Colorado Springs jobs next month.

Workers learned of the layoffs Wednesday in a meeting with new company chairman and chief executive officer Michael Capellas. WorldCom officials say the layoff decision was made before Capellas was hired last week. It will reduce the employee base to 2,700 workers.

The cuts bring to more than 7,600 the number of job cuts in Colorado Springs in the last two years. WorldCom will notify affected workers during the first week of December. The cuts involve high-paying positions at the company's software campus and lower-paying positions at its call center.

WorldCom has filed the biggest bankruptcy in U.S. history. The company admitted $9 billion in accounting fraud this year.
