Republicans Criticize Group's Anti-Discrimination Policy

Republican congressmen Tuesday asked President Bush to pressure Big Brothers and Big Sisters of America to abandon a policy requiring its mentoring programs not to discriminate against gays and lesbians. Bush is an honorary co-chairman of the organization.

The nine representatives were led by Colorado Congressman Tom
Tancredo -- and said the national anti-discrimination rule forces local Big Brothers and Big Sisters affiliates to accept gay and lesbian mentors -- without giving parents a say.

The letter notes that Big Brothers doesn't match adult men with teenage girls -- for obvious reasons.

White House spokesman Scott Stanzel says the president had not received the letter and could not comment.

Colorado Congressman Bob Schaffer also signed the letter.
