West Nile Virus

Weld County is preparing to go on the offensive against West Nile virus next year.

The county was hit the hardest after the virus spread to Colorado this summer. One person and 99 horses tested positive for the disease there.

Now county commissioners say they'll spend a half-million dollars to control the mosquitoes that carry the virus. They're considering raising property taxes to do so.

Spraying pesticides was limited to a small area near Greeley this summer. Next year the county plans to spray all incorporated areas where mosquitoes like to live.
