A new report found that 42 percent of the railroad tracks that cross streets and highways in Colorado have no warning signs, lights or gates.
The analysis by The Denver Post looked at more than 3,000 railroad crossings in Colorado.
It also found that some street-level crossings are not equipped with any type of warning device. Just 12 percent have safety gates, and only seven-and-a-half percent have flashing lights.
Officials say it would cost more than $200 million to provide the most advanced safety systems at Colorado's crossings but only a fraction of the money is available in the budget.
The report comes as a Douglas County teenager remains comatose after her car was hit by a train last week.
