United Announces Job Cuts

The parent company of United Airlines says it will cut 9,000 jobs and reduce its flight schedule by another six percent.

United announced the moves today as part of a restructuring plan aimed at returning to profitability.

UAL Corporation faces a December Second deadline in its fight to avoid a bankruptcy filing.

United hopes to receive a 1.8 billion loan guarantee by then.

The dominant carrier at Denver International Airport says the cutbacks should make United profitable by 2004.

United spokesman Jeff Green says the airline's staff will be cut to 74,000 from the current 83,000 by 2004.

The company says it also plans to retire an additional 49 aircraft.
