Six tax consultants, including a man from Colorado, have been arrested and charged with helping wealthy clients illegally avoid paying $20 million in income tax.
The arrests were the latest in a nationwide investigation by the Internal Revenue Service into an alleged tax fraud ring. Prosecutors say the ring helped 650 clients avoid paying $68 million dollars in taxes.
53 year-old Robert L. West of Castle Rock was among the six men arrested yesterday. The other five live in Ohio, where West use to live.
Eight others have already been charged.
Prosecutors say the six men helped clients shift money into fraudulent trusts to avoid paying taxes on the money. The arrestees face various criminal charges including conspiracy to defraud the government, filing false tax returns and tax evasion.
