Pope John Paul II has been laid to rest in the crypt of St. Peter's Basilica, following a funeral that drew millions of pilgrims, presidents, prime ministers and kings to Rome.
The largest gathering of the powerful and the humble in modern times included dignitaries from 138 countries.
John Paul's remains are inside three coffins, including the one seen during his funeral Mass. It was definitively sealed with the papal and Vatican seals before being put inside caskets made of zinc and walnut. The outside casket has his name, cross and papal coat of arms.
The tomb will be covered with a simple stone bearing his name and dates of birth and death.
