At least four Americans are dead after a military helicopter crash in Afghanistan, and that number could rise.

The crash left 16 people dead in all, and an Afghan police official says most of them appear to be American.

The chopper went down in a desert during bad weather in southeastern Afghanistan. It's the deadliest helicopter crash in the country since Operation Enduring Freedom began after 9-11.

The military says it was traveling to the main U-S base in Afghanistan from a "routine mission" when it went down.
