Teaching English

Educators say a new federal program will help recruit English-language public school teachers and train them to focus on content as well as helping children learn a new language.

It's the first such program in the nation aimed at helping students who aren't native English speakers.

The $9.3 million grant will help prepare English proficiency teachers to use new strategies to help students who do not speak English to assimilate U.S. culture and academics.

The program will focus on developing English through teaching reading, writing, math and science.

Educators say the program will include English immersion, which would have been required under Amendment 31.

The amendment was rejected last week by voters after opponents said it was too stringent.
