United Says Layoffs Possible

Colorado's largest airline , United announced it plans to furlough an additional 27-hundred flight attendants beginning in January because of a reduced flight schedule for next near. The layoffs are expected to begin about the end of January and would bring the number of flight attendants on furlough to roughly 4,800. Officials say the airline will initially offer voluntary furlough options to employees to minimize involuntary furloughs. The nation's Number Two carrier has been negotiating with its flight attendants and machinists in an effort to reach its goal of 5.8 billion dollars in labor cutbacks. The reductions are key to its application for a 1.8 billion dollar federal loan guarantee -- which it says is needed to avoid a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing.
