Professor Review Continues

University of Colorado officials say their review of the writings of a professor who likened some September eleventh victims to a Nazi bureaucrat probably won't be finished until next Monday.

Interim Boulder campus Chancellor Phil DiStefano had said he hoped to complete the review by yesterday. He opened the review last month to determine whether he should recommend that regents fire Churchill, a tenured professor in the ethnic studies department.

In an essay he wrote in the hours after the attacks, Churchill said some of the victims in the World Trade Center towers deserved what happened and called them "little Eichmanns" in a reference to Adolf Eichmann. C-U President Elizabeth Hoffman, who said yesterday she is resigning by June 30th -- has said Churchill would not be fired for his speech, but only if some misconduct is shown.

DiStefano says the review is designed to determine whether Churchill overstepped the bounds of academic freedom as a faculty member.
