Bioterrorism Preparedness

State public safety officials are getting to ready to ask the federal government for nearly $2 million to implement its bioterrorism preparedness plan.

The state Department of Public Safety is due to submit a grant application next week to the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The money would help state officials coordinate planning with local fire, police and emergency medical services.

It would establish training programs for volunteers and update emergency operations centers.

Congress approved the money after the September Eleven attacks.

The Department of Public Health and Environment has already received about 18-and-a-half million federal dollars to bolster its planning and preparedness.
