A federal emergency program is providing $1.26 million to mitigate effects of the High Park Fire in northern Colorado.
The money is from the emergency watershed program of the Natural Resources Conservation Service. It will reimburse some of the roughly $3.5 million the cities of Greeley and Fort Collins and others are spending to prevent ash and debris from washing off burned areas into the Cache la Poudre River.
The High Park Fire burned about 136 square miles after it started June 9 west of Fort Collins.
In September and October, crews treated about 4.5 square miles of steep terrain with weed-free straw and mulch to reduce the risk of erosion, flooding and mudslides and to encourage regrowth. More work is planned in the spring.
