What's said in the state's college lecture halls and classrooms may soon be protected by lawmakers. But it could still be subject to scrutiny by other faculty members.

A bill to protect academic freedom is already in the works in the state legislature. It outlines the rights and responsibilities of students and professors.

But a provision, which requires other tenured professors to review whether a colleague should have their tenure revoked, may also be included.

Critics of the bill say it would make it harder for Colorado to attract good faculty members.

The academic freedom bill was being discussed even before the controversy surrounding CU professor Ward Churchill started.
