A debate at the state capitol over how much money lawmakers can receive in gifts to run their offices.

Colorado is one of only 5 states with no limit on such gifts.

Donations are used to help pay for staffers, mileage, and other expenses and must be reported to the secretary of state every January.

One state senator wants a complete ban on such gifts and wants any donation to fall under campaign spending restrictions. That's because he feels lawmakers can be influenced by special interest groups.

But the state's senate minority leader believes lawmakers should be allowed to raise money.
