Obesity Program Proposal

Some severely overweight Medicaid patients would be able to get help losing weight under a proposal being considered at the state Capitol.

The bill seeks to create a pilot project to treat up to 400 people who are both overweight and have another health problem, like diabetes. The exact details haven't been worked out yet, but treatments could include drugs and nutrition counseling.

Surgery would not be an option, because there's only one doctor in Colorado who does gastric bypass operations.

Boulder Representative Alice Madden says there's over a three-year wait for such surgery now.

A contractor would be hired to run the program, and be paid based on how much money the state ended up saving on Medicaid costs.

The program would be funded by gifts and donations, and moneys saved elsewhere in the Medicaid budget.
