A Lamar woman who allegedly drowned her two children will be committed to the state Mental Health Institute in Pueblo for an indeterminate period.

Two defense psychiatrists and another testifying for prosecutors told a judge during an eight-hour hearing today that Rebekah Amaya was insane at the time of the October 2003 drownings.

Amaya was charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of four-year-old Grace Headlee and five-month-old Gabriel Amaya and had pleaded innocent by reason of insanity.

Police say Amaya told them she killed the children after getting a sign from a spider that crawled across her hand.

Amaya didn't speak during the hearing and can request a release after 180 days.
