A state workers union has set up a hot line to take ideas for trimming up to $388 million from the state budget.

The Colorado Federation of Public Employees' Government Waste Hot Line started taking calls Wednesday, after Gov. Bill Owens said he was asking workers for suggestions on making a second round of budget cuts.

Union president Jo Romero said state workers see and hear things that could help officials reduce waste.

Owens slashed $220 million last spring from the $13.8 billion budget state lawmakers sent him for the fiscal year that began July 1. A slumping economy is now forcing additional cuts.

The hot line number is (800) 487-7402.
