Democrats appear to be gaining ground in the state Legislature -- with control of the state Senate in reach and the state House up for grabs.

The early trend shows Democrats could take an 18-to-17 majority in the Colorado State Senate. The party now trails by one seat.

Late-night returns from around the state show Democrats have won four seats and are leading in seven. There are seven Democratic holdovers.

In the House, the trend points toward Democrats winning 32 seats and Republicans 31. Two others are too close to call.

Democrats had won eleven House seats and were leading in 21 others.

Eleven Republicans in the House didn't seek re-election this year.

The last time Democrats controlled both houses was 1960.
