Republican businessman Pete Coors has conceded the United States Senate race to Democratic Attorney General Ken Salazar.

Coors told supporters who'd gathered for what they hoped would be a victory rally that he'd spoken with Salazar by phone to congratulate him.

Salazar delivered his acceptance speech a few moments later, saying the campaign has been a long journey -- and praising Coors as a "good man."

With 80 percent of the state's precincts reporting, Salazar has 52 percent of the vote compared with Coors' 46 percent.

Coors and Salazar spent a combined $15 million in their campaigns to replace retiring Republican Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell.

Salazar becomes the first Hispanic U-S senator in more than 25 years.
