Local phone service providers in Colorado are hoping to restructure in-state long distance by charging a flat rate of $1.47 per month to make the calls. Currently residents pay access charges on each long-distance call they make.
But AT&T, Qwest, WorldCom, Sprint and the Colorado Telecommunications Association representing rural phone companies
have made the request to the Colorado Public Utilities Commission
Friday.
Qwest spokeswoman Rebecca Tinelle says the restructuring is in response to a Public Utilities Commission investigation.
The flat rate mirrors federal restructuring of state-to-state long distance charges.
Office of Consumer Counsel Director Ken Reif says the proposal is unfair for those who don't make a lot of intrastate long-distance calls.
