Could the state's coroners not be right for the job? Some experts say "yes".

They say many of the state's coroners lack medical experience which can create a potential for error.

Only 13 of the 63 coroners are physicians.

Colorado rules state each county elects a coroner to investigate and determine the cause of death.

The only requirements for the candidates? They must be at least 18 years-old, a registered voter, and not have a felony record.

Critics say the state should appoint a regional medical examiner who graduates from med school and undergoes an 4 extra years of specialized training to review deaths.
