United Airlines is considering shutting down its high-tech automated baggage system at Denver International Airport. The move would be part of the carrier's bankruptcy reorganization.

United spokesman Jeff Green said the company wants to determine whether it is more economical and efficient to use the automated system or a conventional one.

Problems with the computerized baggage-sorting system caused repeated delays in the opening of the airport in the 1990s. United took it over and the city built an alternate system using conveyor belts, tugs and carts to serve other airlines.

When United signed a new airport lease last year, it decided to continue using the computerized system.
