Fort Carson Hearing

A military hearing Thursday for soldiers accused of smothering an Iraqi general during an interrogation was closed to the public.

An investigating officer ruled that allowing the public to listen would hurt national security.

The Article 32 hearing at Fort Carson was to determine whether three soldiers will face a court-martial.

They are accused in the death last year of Major General Abed Hamed Mowhoush in Iraq. The Army said Mowhoush died of asphyxiation from chest compression and from being smothered.

Chief Warrant Officer Jefferson Williams, Sergeant 1st Class William Sommer and Specialist Jerry Loper are charged with murder and dereliction of duty. Chief Warrant Officer Lewis Welshofer Junior will get a hearing later on the same charges.
