Coloradans Still Awaiting Benefits

Thousands of poor Coloradans are waiting for welfare benefits.

That's because counties statewide are continuing to fall behind in processing claims with the state's new 200 million dollar welfare computer system.

Teams from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Stamp program recently visited the Colorado Department of Human Services, a date entry center and five counties across the state.

The U.S.D.A. teams found it would take at least two months to eliminate the backlog.

Arapahoe, Jefferson and Pueblo counties were so far behind in some food stamp cases, that the U.S.D.A. teams said they had no idea when those counties would catch up.

State officials are disputing some of the U.S.D.A. findings and are planning to meet with federal officials Thursday.
