The long-time president of Colorado State University and chancellor of the CSU system has announced he will step down at the end of the fiscal year.
Albert C. Yates made the announcement Friday morning during a news conference in Fort Collins. His retirement will mark the end of one of the longest tenures of any CSU president. Only two other presidents have served longer than Yates' 13 years.
Yates says he wants to spend more time with his wife and two young daughters.
Yates is credited with rebuilding the campus better than it was before a $130 million flood devastated CSU in 1997. The National Western Stock Show named Yates its 2002 Citizen of the West last year. He was the 24th person overall and the first black to receive the award.
Yates will continue to serve as chancellor of the CSU system for a brief time following June 30th to ensure a smooth transition of the University of Southern Colorado to Colorado State University-Pueblo.
