Colorado's statehouse could be made a safer place for workers and visitors with the help of casino proceeds collected in Cripple Creek, Black Hawk and Central City.
The state has applied for a $2.3 million grant from Colorado's Historical Fund to resume work on the building. The historical fund receives a portion of gaming taxes and distributes them to preservation projects. The state intends to apply for $30 million in grants during the next six years. The money comes from taxes on gambling in the three mountain towns.
Work on new stairwells, fire alarms and sprinklers at the Capitol stopped last year because of the souring economy.
