Money troubles are causing United Airlines to search for ways to cut costs.

One solution? Cutting back on high fuel expenses.

With oil prices at nearly $50 a barrel, fuel is the airline's highest cost after labor.

The airline has made it mandatory for its 7200 pilots and 300 dispatchers to attend a one-day training session to learn how to lower the aircrafts' weight. They include suggestions like removing unused appliances and flying at a lower cruising speed.

United execs hope the training will save $50 million a year.
