Frontier Airlines announced Friday that they will be building a new $25 million heavy maintenance facility at the Colorado Springs Airport.

The facility will sit on 11 acres and be approximately 100,000 square feet. The new facility will be base for approximately 225 airline professionals. The jobs will be first offered to those that are working at the facility in Denver, but there may be some jobs open to Southern Colorado residents as well.

Frontier says that they chose Colorado Springs over Denver, Greeley, Pueblo, Fort Collins and a variety of other locations throughout the state, simply because of the package the city offered.

The city has agreed to rebate 100 percent of both the personal property taxes and the sales use taxes of the facility for the duration of their operation in the Springs.

Colorado Springs Airport Aviation Director Mark Earle says that the benefits to the city will far outweigh the loss in revenue with those tax incentives. He says that without the competitive package that was offered, Frontier wouldn't have chosen Colorado Springs and they wouldn't have received the taxes anyway. This way the city can still benefit from all of the other economic advantages of having Frontier Airlines working out of the Colorado Springs Airport.

Construction will begin on the building in late spring of 2008. It is expected that it will take 12 to 18 months to complete. Frontier will be offering a flight to Denver from Colorado Springs starting in Spring of '08.

Don't count on getting a job unless you already work for Frontier. They only hire from within the company.

I don't understand why "the city" "agreed" to "rebate" taxes it "wasn't going to receive anyway" sounds like typical economic-political doublespeak, as usual. So what is the benefit to JOE CITIZEN? Are there going to be any JOBS worth having? How many? When? How much is this going to INCREASE airfares through COS? Your "reporting" leaves MUCH to be desired and is no more useful than a gossip column.
