State Needs Improvement on Tracking Sex Offenders

Legislative auditors say state officials lack information on the whereabouts of some sex offenders. The audit also says the state needs to improve efforts to prevent escapes from residential community
corrections programs. The residential programs are where some sex offenders are sent after or instead of prison.

The audit was of residential community corrections programs within the Colorado Department of Public Safety. It states offenders are "not
consistently'' getting the employment, educational and vocational
services that should be available, or paying their court-ordered
costs.

The auditors found 27% of the offenders they sampled committed new offenses within two years of their release.
