Denver Flooding

Posted: Sat 7:52 PM, Sep 14, 2002

(Denver-AP) -- Denver city officials are investigating whether the massive T-Rex construction project helped to cause street flooding that stranded motorists on Interstate 25 Friday.

Firefighters waded through chest-high caramel colored water to rescue motorists who had to climb to the roof of their cars.

The water collected in an area known for its flooding that has been left more vulnerable because of the construction project.

Project officials say hay bales designed to filter out dirt were placed near the storm sewer, and that could have added to the flooding. A new storm sewer that is three-times larger is being built.

About a dozen vehicles, some nearly submerged, were trapped by the ponds that formed along the so-called Narrows Section of the highway near the Washington and Broadway street exits.

Several of the cars were underneath the Logan Street bridge.
