After the long, dry summer, Governor Bill Owens has lifted the statewide fire ban. It's a good sign, but that doesn't necessarily mean you can light a fire at your favorite campsite. There are still areas where fires, especially campfires, are banned.

Teller, Fremont and Pueblo Counties still have fire bans in effect. And the wildland team from Springs fire warns, were not out of woods yet. They say, even though we have rain, it's a temporary solution to our problem and we're going to need a huge amount of rain and snowfall this winter to help us.

El Paso County has lifted its burn ban. However, if you're going to do open burning in the unincorporated parts of the county, you still need a permit just as you did before the ban. Also, charcoal grills are now allowed. During the ban, only gas grills were legal.

Custer County remains under a fire ban. The Pike and San Isabel National Forests are also keeping bans in place, for now. All campfires, charcoal grills and outdoor smoking are banned in those areas.
