Fifty-three-year-old Terry Schmidt of Avon, Indiana, disappeared
during a hike on land burned in the 137-thousand acre Hayman Fire.
Authorities say she had hiked in that area before, but say the fire
may have destroyed familiar landmarks that Schmidt would have
needed to find her way out.
Sheriff's deputies on horseback joined about three dozen
searchers to look for Schmidt yesterday. They searched until dusk
but found no sign of Schmidt.
Lost Valley Ranch co-owner Karen Foster says ash remains several
feet thick in some spots as a result of the fire. Foster says any
footprints Schmidt might have left would be quickly obliterated by
even a slight wind.
