Charges Dropped in Dwayne Carswell case

Prosecutors have dropped assault and harassment charges against Denver Broncos tight end Dwayne Carswell, deciding not to take the case to trial for a third time.

Two previous trials in the case ended in mistrial.

The 30-year-old Carswell faced charges of misdemeanor assault and harassment for allegedly manhandling his former girlfriend outside a hotel while he was in Pueblo for a charity basketball game in March 2001.

Carswell's third trial was scheduled to begin today, but Deputy District Attorney Karl Tameler says the charges were dropped Thursday in the interest of judicial economy.

The dismissal was contingent on Carswell making a 10,000 donation to the YWCA of Pueblo and performing 40 hours of community service.

Carswell denied hurting the woman when police interviewed him. He declined to comment throughout the case.
