Employee representatives from the chains overwhelmingly approved
a proposal from federal mediators to extend the current five year
contract until October 16th. The contract was to expire tomorrow night.
Workers are still scheduled to vote Friday in Colorado Springs
and Saturday in Denver on the last contract offer and to formally
ratify the extension.
Contract talks came to a standstill as the grocery chains
proposed shifting more of their health care costs to store workers
and reducing wages for newly hired employees.
The United Food and Commercial Workers Local Seven represents
more than 17,000 workers at the three chains.
