Details are beginning to emerge about the horrifying massacre inside an Aurora movie theater.
As the opening credits for "The Dark Knight Rises" rolled, 12 people were killed in at the Century 16 theater in Aurora. A reported total of 71 were shot.
One of the victims has been identified as Jessica Ghawi, a former resident of San Antonio, Texas who had recently moved to Denver. San Antonio CBS affiliate Kens 5 says Ghawi was attending the midnight showing with friend Brent Lowak of Bulverde, Texas. Lowak's father confirmed to Kens 5 that his son was also shot; Lowak is reportedly undergoing surgery.
Twitter allowed for an eerie glance into the final moments of the Ghawi's life. Tweets in the hours leading up to the movie, taken from her twitter handle @JessicaRedfield, indicate she was excited about the seeing the latest "Batman" installment.
Her last tweet appears to have been sent out shortly before the movie began, simply saying, "MOVIE DOESN'T START FOR 20 MINUTES."
According to a blog post attributed to Ghawi, just one month earlier she narrowly avoided a mass shooting at the Eaton Center in Toronto, where a gunman opened fire in a food court, killing one and injuring seven. In her blog, Ghawi detailed how a decision to grab a burger instead of sushi at the food court saved her life.
"I can’t get this odd feeling out of my chest. This empty, almost sickening feeling won’t go away. I noticed this feeling when I was in the Eaton Center in Toronto just seconds before someone opened fire in the food court. An odd feeling which led me to go outside and unknowingly out of harm‘s way. It’s hard for me to wrap my mind around how a weird feeling saved me from being in the middle of a deadly shooting," Ghawi wrote on June 5.
Pentagon press secretary George Little reports some members of the military were either killed or wounded in the shooting.
A Houston-area woman told CBS affiliate KHOU that her sister was also among those injured in the shooting, and is currently undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital after being shot twice.
The Houston woman told KHOU that her sister was with her boyfriend and infant son, neither of whom were injured.
In a decision that may have saved their lives, KHOU reports that the woman wanted to sit in the front seats of the theater, but her boyfriend convinced her to sit near the back to get the full effects of the movie.
