Drugs may have played a role in a fatal car crash Christmas morning.
State Patrol says a teenager was killed after driver Ulises Nunez, 23, twice overcorrected and lost control of his vehicle. Troopers say the vehicle ping-ponged across the roadway as Nunez first crossed the westbound lanes trying to right himself after drifting off road, then back across those same lanes after he overcorrected again following a collision with a delineator post.
It was that second attempt that proved fatal: CSP says when he overcorrected the second time, he went off the road and hit a traffic sign. The vehicle rolled, ejecting both passengers. Nunez was the only one wearing a seat belt.
Britney Ackerman, 19, of Kansas City died at the scene. Carlos Belalcazar, 20, of Kansas City sustained minor injuries. Nunez, also of Kansas City, was not injured.
The crash happened just after 6:30 a.m. five miles east of La Junta.
It remains under investigation.
