VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) -- Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson says marijuana should be treated like alcohol because the government's war on drugs has failed.

The outspoken evangelical Christian says he has never smoked marijuana, and he is not encouraging it. But he says the war on drugs is costing taxpayers billions of dollars and people should not be sent to prison for marijuana possession.

Robertson appeared to support legalizing pot in a New York Times story that was published Thursday. His spokesman, however, says Robertson supports decriminalizing marijuana, not legalization.

The spokesman says Robertson was not available for an interview with AP.

Robertson in 2010 called for ending mandatory prison sentences for marijuana possession convictions.

Robertson hosts "The 700 Club" on the Christian Broadcasting Network.

You need to educate yourself. What you said about marijuana is not true. In addition to the many health benefits received from using it, marijuana has been scientifically to improve lung function. Stop believing the lies that have been parroted for years, and seek the truth.

Finally a voice of reason from Pat Robertson. America has been waging its War Against Marijuana for the past seventy years with absolutely NO success. The harms caused by Marijuana Prohibition are much greater than the use of this drug itself. Its time we all recognize that marijuana is dangerous when it is illegal, not illegal because it is dangerous. Legalize now and stop this insane policy.

I do not smoke pot, either. However, that is the smartest thing to fall out of Pat Robertson's mouth in two decades. I AM for legalization. The "war" on drugs is ridiculous and an obscene waste of money and resources. Though I do not encourage drug us, I am a realist in that it has been around since man stood upright and the chances of it going away are nil if you had any clear notion of human psyche and behavior. To send pot smokers to prison, the expense and destruction caused by this is utterly insane. Please legalize, for ALL our sakes.
