Karval Hosts Annual Mountain Plover Festival

KARVAL, Colo. (AP) -- The ranching hamlet of Karval is hosting its seventh Annual Mountain Plover Festival to celebrate the bird that typically starts arriving in Colorado in early April.

The town is hosting the festival Friday through Sunday in southern Lincoln County in eastern Colorado.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife says more than half of the world's population of mountain plovers nests in the state.

The sandy-brown birds are about eight inches tall, with long legs. They have a white wing stripe and wing linings and a black band near the tail tip.

The town developed the mountain plover festival to promote tourism from bird watchers and others.
