The "Queen of Southern Cuisine" says she is uncertain if her diet played a role in her developing Type 2 diabetes.
"That is part of the puzzle," Deen said when asked about her high-fat, high-calorie recipes on NBC's "Today" show. Deen immediately listed other potential factors: genetics, stress, age and lifestyle.
"I've always eaten in moderation," Deen said, adding that she has always told viewers of her Food Network show the same.
Deen is now teaming up with drug maker Novo Nordisk to launch a program that aims to help people live with Type 2 diabetes.
Type 2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes. Those inflicted either don't produce enough insulin, or do not use it efficiently, which allows excess sugar to accumulate in the blood.
Deen says she was diagnosed three years ago.
