Hooked - (Stacia Naquin)
Updated: 10/11/2013 - I'm SO CLOSE to being able to do a pull-up. So my trainer introduced something new into my training.
The deputy commanding general for Fort Carson spoke about the deaths of four local soldiers in the crash of a Blackhawk helicopter.
He says, while the deaths are tragic, they will not deter soldiers from completeing their mission.
Fort Carson has now suffered a total of 38 deaths in Iraq. But Brigadier General Joseph Orr says dealing with the deaths is not getting any easier. "Every loss, from the first one to these last 4, are difficult. They did what they were trained to do. They did it proudly. I couldn't be any prouder of them."
All 4 of the Fort Carson soldiers killed in Thursday's attack were part of the 571st Air Ambulance Company, a realitively small unit that has already suffered 7 deaths.
Shortly after officials learned of the deaths, the delicate process of notification of families began. "The most important thing we can do for a family member is not speed the accuracy of the information that we provide." General Orr says the focus is now on helping the families of the dead soldiers cope with the loss.
"The emergency action team pulled together. We have met and addressed what the immediate needs are for the 4 family members and we'll continue with that through."
Most of the post's 12,000 soldiers are expected to rotate home in May.
