A video posted to YouTube Monday indicates that the “hacktivist” group known as Anonymous is targeting Facebook. They’ve even set a date, saying the attack is planned for January 28.
According to CNET, the narrator of the video suggests that anyone who supports the cause download a program in order to participate in a Facebook attack. The attack, he says, needs coordinated participation to bring down the social network’s massive collection of servers.
The video also says that "an online war has begun between Anonymous, the people and the government of the United States."
CNET is also reporting that the YouTube account appears to have some Anonymous connection. There is more than one of the group's videos posted to it.
A previous video purporting to be in Anonymous' name, said that Facebook would be brought down on November 5. That didn’t happen.
According to CNN Money, Anonymous also took credit for bringing down the websites for the Department of Justice, the Recording Industry Association of America and Motion Picture Association of America after the federal government shut down Megaupload.com.
In that case, it appears their weapon of choice was an attack known as a distributed denial of service. The DDoS directs a flood of traffic to a website and causes it to crash by overwhelming its servers. No actual security breach is employed.
