Drinking coffee could protect men from the most lethal form of prostate cancer.
A Harvard study found that men who drank six or more cups a day had a 60 percent lower risk of developing the condition, while men who drank one to three cups a day had a 30 percent lower risk. Similar results were found among men who drank regular or decaffeinated coffee. The researchers looked at 48,000 men between 1986 and 2008, and followed their coffee consumption and the incidence of prostate cancer.
Researchers are uncertain why coffee appears to reduce the risk of prostate cancer so significantly, but note that coffee contains both antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds that help regulate insulin levels. Coffee has also been linked to a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes. A recent study out of Sweden has also showed that women who consume a lot of coffee may be at a lower risk of developing breast cancer.
Prostate cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death in men.
