Colorado continues to have the lowest obesity rates in the country, with just over 20 percent of adults in the state qualifying as obese.

But according to a new government study, the number of states with "very high" obesity rates has grown from nine to 12.

Mississippi has the highest obesity rate in the country, with nearly 35 percent of its adult population obese. Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas and West Virginia all have obesity rates over 30 percent, which is considered a very high rate. The South as a whole has an obesity rate of 29.5 percent, the highest in the country. The West has the lowest prevalence of obesity at 24.3 percent.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention used a telephone survey in 2011 to collect this data. Responders were asked to give their height and weight. Homes without landlines were included in the survey. The CDC released the results of the study Monday.

Based on the CDC website, Colorado's obesity rates have gone down slightly since 2010, dropping from 21 percent to 20.7 percent.
