Over 200 Pueblo students were given free fresh produce Wednesday to take home to their families.

There were lines at East High School and Risley Middle School to take advantage of the healthy gift.

Care and Share Food Bank teamed up with Pueblo City Schools to help struggling families.

“It used to be that just families that were low income families had a need for supplemental food. Now we’ve realized that more and more working families also have a need, maybe even dual income households that need assistance to get nutritious food,” said Tom Ramirez, Care and Share Director of Partner Agency and Development.

Around 120 students at Risley Middle School filled up their bags with nutritious produce. Officials say 91% of students at the school qualify for free and reduced lunches, so they knew the need was great.

Around 92 students at East High School walked home with bags full of items like potatoes, carrots, oranges, and cabbage.

Officials estimate over 1500 pounds of fresh produce was given out at each school, hoping to feed over 600 family members.

Care and Share Food Bank for Southern Colorado serves 31 counties. They plan to continue helping families during the summer saying, “Hunger never takes a vacation”.
