A sweeping trans fats ban for public schools is before Colorado senators after a two-week delay.
Senators are looking at a bill to eliminate artificial sources of the artery-clogging fat from public schools. Trans fats are rare in regular school lunches, but health advocates say schools still serve trans fats through fundraisers, a la carte side items and vending machines.
A hearing scheduled Thursday will examine how far the ban should go. The bill may be amended to give schools more time to comply, or to exempt after-school fundraisers such as bake sales.
The hearing was originally scheduled for earlier this month, but lawmakers delayed it without explanation.
